Abolitionist, potter, entrepreneur, Josiah Wedgwood revolutionised ceramics. His pioneering spirit transformed a cottage industry into an art form and his legacy is internationally renowned today. Founded in the 1770s Wedgwood's elegant designs were influenced by classicism but his pottery though decorative was functional, durable and made to be enjoyed and used by generations. His vigorous design process and exacting quality is an approach shared by Ferian. Wedgwood developed its signature fine, matt, porcelain known as Jaspareware, through over 10,000 experiments. Many colours were created including dark blue, Portland blue, lilac and sage green, but by far the most famous is Wedgwood blue, a pale blue, recognisable around the world today. The patterned motifs were delicately applied by hand then kiln fired. At Ferian we are particularly drawn to cameos featuring heraldry, nature and nautical motifs for use in our jewellery. Once taken from our archive collection they are not able to be replaced, due to worldwide scarcity as they are no longer produced by Wedgwood. The Wedgwood pottery archive collection is now a museum and owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
